LAWN AERATION

Healthy thick green turfgrass begins at the roots in the soil. Core aeration reduces compaction of the soil, breaks down thatch and allows water and nutrients directly to the soil and roots. Core aeration is the mechanical practice of pulling core soil plugs out of your turf. This entire process is repeated 1000s of times across your lawn.

Although at first, the plugs may seem unattractive, they quickly break down and disappear. The soil plugs also contain millions of microbes that help digest the thatch layer and convert it into organic matter that is then recycled back into the soil. This practice is a great benefit during the growing season and extending into the winter months.

Lawn Aeration Process

We recommend this practice be done at a minimum of once per year and performed during the growing seasons (early spring or late fall). We encourage late fall to be the best time for this practice with the cooler temps. It is best not to not disrupt the pre-emergent application in the growing season of spring if you have yet to have a core aeration done. There is still a window of opportunity for a springtime core aeration before a pre-emergent treatment.

In the event you are watering your lawn regularly and are experiencing run-off, your soil is most likely compacted. This compaction causes the thinning of the turf and does not allow water and nutrients reaching the roots. Compaction can start from traffic. Pets running the same path or ride on mowers mowing the same pattern can cause compaction. The type of soil on your property is linked with the vulnerability of compaction. Sandy soil is more permeable while clay is easily compacted and is more prone to create water run-off.

A great addition to a core aeration service is over-seeding. The seeds will be planted into the cultivated soil and allow for new growth to push out. Over-seeding is a great way to renovate an existing lawn that will result in new grass growth as well as increased root development for existing grass. This creates a thicker, greener and healthier lawn.
